Path clearance at Borgie Mains – January ’10

Our first event of the new year was on a snowy Sunday, the 31st. We met to clear gorse from an overgrown path at Castletown. The path leads from Tansfield at the Castletown end, to Borgie Mains. It was a road used by the old quarry located just off the road at Borgie Mains. The track is lined by flagstones, and following it takes you among some great scenery, looking out over Castletown, Dunnet and Hoy.  We also spotted a fox making his way through an adjacent field.

There was plenty of snow around but the sun shone for the duration of our work, with a snow shower making an appearance just in time for our tea and biscuits!

For us to be able to manoeuvre our cars around to go home, one brave volunteer reversed on the snowy track all the way to join the road again. It was a joy to behold and after nearly getting stuck in the ditch, she managed to pull it off! Everybody else then managed to leave quite easily.

Volunteer

Individuals volunteer for many different reasons, but one thing common to all Countryside Volunteers is that they find it interesting, challenging, rewarding and most exciting of all… they receive opportunities to acquaint themselves with the environment around them; in ways most people are never able to.
