Caithness Countryside Volunteers

Maintenance at small blue colony – June ’10

On Sunday 20th we met at Seadrift. The task this month was to carry out some improvements at the access steps by the small blue colony. Sand was cleared from the steps and a wooden supporting wall was built beside them to protect the dune face. The small blue butterfly is a national priority species with a small colony at Dunnet. I saw my first one this summer at the colony here!

We also did a bit of scarifying around the Scottish primroses to help with germination.

Update: August – the countryside rangers finished the retaining wall, backfilled with sand, planted marram grass to stabilise the sand and sowed kidney vetch seed.
