Dunnet Forest tidy up – Oct ’10
On Sunday 10th we met at Dunnet Forest and joined forces with volunteers from Dunnet Forestry Trust. The community forest ranger, Kirsty Rosie, had several jobs to be completed. Logs were trimmed and loaded to heat the Castlehill Heritage Centre over the winter and 30 bird boxes were erected in good time for next spring. A hardy team braved the 2 inch thorns of the invasive sea buckthorn which was removed where it was threatening rarer trees and the safety of passing walkers. Lastly some of the rank grass in the clearings was strimmed.
Kirsty Rosie explained “removing the dead grasses will have a positive effect on the wildflowers next year and in turn our bees and butterflies”. She added “The forest relies heavily on the work of volunteers and charitable donations so it was wonderful to welcome so many keen helpers on Sunday”. Anyone interested in getting involved in future volunteer events please contact kirstyrosie@dunnetforest.org.
After a mornings hard work we all enjoyed a well deserved cup of tea and some biscuits!
